Which airport should you use?
BJX (Del Bajío, Silao) is the default. It sits about 30 kilometres from Guanajuato Capital, handles domestic flights plus direct routes from several US cities, and puts you in the center in well under an hour outside rush hour. QRO (Querétaro) sometimes has cheaper international fares but adds roughly two hours of ground travel each way. MEX or AIFA (Mexico City) only makes sense if the flight price difference is large and you do not mind a four to five hour bus ride.
One thing that surprises first-time visitors: the drive from BJX is easy, but the last ten minutes are not. Guanajuato's center is a maze of one-way stone streets and subterranean tunnels. Have your hotel's exact address and, ideally, its phone number ready for the driver.
Getting from BJX to the center
Authorized airport taxis wait outside arrivals and charge a fixed zone fare — buy at the counter inside the terminal rather than negotiating on the curb. Private transfers booked in advance cost more but are worth it for late arrivals, groups with luggage, or anyone staying up a callejón where a car cannot reach the door. Ride-hailing coverage around the airport is inconsistent, so do not plan around it.

Arriving by bus
Guanajuato's Central de Autobuses sits on the highway side of town, roughly ten to fifteen minutes from Centro Histórico by taxi or city bus. First-class lines such as Primera Plus and ETN run frequent services from León, Querétaro, Guadalajara and Mexico City, with reserved seats and luggage handling. Second-class buses are cheaper and stop more often.
From the station, taxis queue at the exit and city buses marked for Centro run the tunnel route into town. If you are heading to Paseo de la Presa or another uphill address, a taxi is the simpler choice with bags.
Getting around once you are here
Guanajuato Capital is a walking city, and that is not a slogan — the historic center is compact, largely pedestrian in feel, and full of stairs. Wear real shoes. City buses run through the tunnels and are cheap; taxis are plentiful, inexpensive and the fastest way uphill. For hills like El Pípila, the funicular behind Teatro Juárez saves a hard climb.
Because the tunnels replace surface roads, directions given by walking apps and driving apps can differ sharply. When in doubt, ask for the nearest plaza rather than the street name.
