Temperature: the highlands are dry and the nights are genuinely cool most of the year, so bring a layer that a beach trip would not need. Shoes: the centre is stone, steep and stepped; sandals that worked in Tulum will not work here.
The payoff is a completely different Mexico in one short flight: a UNESCO mining city built into a ravine, a working university town rather than a resort strip, and a food and festival calendar that has nothing to do with the Caribbean.
