The bus
Querétaro''s Central de Autobuses is large and well organised, split into terminals by carrier class. First-class services to Guanajuato run through the day with Primera Plus and ETN among the operators; the ride is about three hours with a stop or two, and seats are assigned.
Buy at the counter or on the carrier''s app. Midweek you can usually turn up and travel within the hour; Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings and long weekends fill up, and during Cervantino in October the Guanajuato-bound buses are the busiest of the year.
Aim to arrive before dark on a first visit. Guanajuato''s centre is a maze of alleys and stairways, and finding a small hotel with luggage at night is harder than it needs to be.
Driving the 45D
Take the 45D west toward Irapuato/Silao, then the Guanajuato spur — about 200 km, two and a half hours, all good toll road. It is one of the easiest drives in central Mexico.
The complication is not the highway, it is the destination. Guanajuato''s traffic runs through a network of one-way tunnels under the city and it is genuinely disorienting the first time. Ask your hotel for its parking instructions before you set off, or leave the car at a paid lot on the edge of the centre and walk in. Arriving from QRO airport
If you land at Querétaro Intercontinental, you do not need to go into the city at all. Pre-booked private transfers and shared shuttles run straight to Guanajuato in about two and a half hours.
The alternative — airport taxi into the city bus terminal, then a bus — works and costs less, but adds an hour or more of waiting. For an evening landing, book the transfer.

Is a day trip worth it?
It is possible: an early bus out, six or seven hours in the city, an evening bus back. But Guanajuato at night — the callejoneadas, the lit-up plazas, the view from the Pípila after dark — is half the reason to come. One night turns a rushed day into a proper visit, and two lets you add the mummies, the museums and a hillside lookout without hurrying.
