Getting to San Miguel de Allende: Airports, Buses & Transfers

Guanajuato Local Hub Editors 2026-08-12 6 min readLast reviewed & updated

Which airport to fly into, how long the transfer takes, bus options from Querétaro, León, CDMX and Guanajuato, and what it costs in 2026.

Flying in

QRO is the shortest transfer and the calmest airport, with US connections through Houston and Dallas. BJX (Bajío, near León) has more US routes and is 90 minutes out along a good highway. MEX has the widest choice of fares, but budget four hours door to door and avoid arriving during CDMX rush hour. Book transfers in advance for late-night landings; airport taxis exist but cost more.

By bus

First-class lines (ETN, Primera Plus) connect San Miguel with Querétaro, León, Guanajuato Capital, Celaya and Mexico City's Terminal Norte. Buses are comfortable, reserved-seat and cheap. From Guanajuato Capital the ride is about 1h30. The Central de Autobuses sits west of town; take a taxi to your hotel rather than walking with luggage.

Once you arrive

You will not need a car. The Centro is walkable and taxis cost 60–90 MXN across town. Plan your first evening around the Jardín — see the things to do list — with dinner at Restaurante Munay or La Parada and a drink at Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar. Hotels are listed on /explore/san-miguel-de-allende/stay.
