The direct bus
This is the easy answer. Primera Plus and ETN both run first-class services from Terminal Central del Norte to San Miguel de Allende — assigned seats, air conditioning, luggage in the hold, around four hours.
Departures are less frequent than on the Querétaro corridor, so book ahead, especially for Friday, Sunday and holiday travel, and especially around Semana Santa, the September fiestas and Día de Muertos, when San Miguel fills up.
Take a morning departure. You arrive in time to drop your bags, walk to the Jardín and have the afternoon, rather than arriving tired at dusk and losing a day.
The Querétaro route, and why it often wins
Mexico City to Querétaro is one of the busiest bus corridors in the country: departures run constantly, the trip is about three hours, and it is hard to be stranded. From Querétaro''s central bus station, onward services to San Miguel run regularly and take roughly an hour to an hour and a half.
Two transfers instead of one, but far more flexibility — this is the route to use when the direct bus is sold out or leaves at an unhelpful hour. It also lets you break the journey in Querétaro for a night, which is a genuinely pleasant stop.
Flying
QRO (Querétaro Intercontinental) is the closest airport to San Miguel — around an hour by road, with pre-bookable shuttles and private transfers. It handles a decent number of US connections.
BJX (Del Bajío, León/Silao) is about an hour and a half away and often has better international schedules and fares. Both work; QRO is closer, BJX is usually cheaper to reach from abroad.
Domestic flights from Mexico City to either airport rarely make sense: the flight is short, but airport time at both ends plus the ground transfer eats the saving. Fly in from further away, take the bus from Mexico City.
Book the airport transfer before you land. Arriving after dark and improvising at the terminal is the one part of this journey worth paying to avoid.
Driving
North on the 57D toward Querétaro, then the San Miguel exit — about 280 km and roughly three and a half hours of driving, plus however long Mexico City takes to release you. Toll road the whole way; take it.
In town, be realistic about the car. San Miguel''s centre is cobbled, steep in places, tightly one-way and short on parking. If your hotel offers parking, take it; if not, use a paid lot and walk. The car earns its keep on day trips — Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato Capital, the Santuario de Atotonilco — not inside the town itself.

Arriving in San Miguel
The bus station sits on the edge of town, a five to ten minute taxi from the centre. Taxis wait outside; fares in town are short and inexpensive, and it is normal to agree the price before setting off.
Give the driver a landmark — the Jardín, the Parroquia, Zacateros, Aldama — rather than a street number. Once you are in the centre, everything is walkable, and the cobblestones are the reason to bring shoes with grip and a flat sole.
