Guanajuato sits at around 2,000 metres in the highlands, so it is never tropical. Expect big differences between midday and midnight in every season, and pack a layer regardless of the month. The seasons in plain terms
Dry season runs roughly from October to May. Days are bright and comfortable, evenings are genuinely cool, and rain is rare. This is the season the city was made for — outdoor concerts, callejoneadas, terrace dinners, long walks up to El Pípila.
Rainy season runs roughly from June to September. Mornings are usually clear, clouds build in the afternoon, and rain arrives in short intense bursts rather than all-day drizzle. The hills turn green, the light is dramatic, and prices soften. Bring shoes with grip: wet cobblestones and stone stairs are slippery.
March through May is the warmest stretch before the rains, and the driest. April and May afternoons can feel strong in direct sun, and evenings stay pleasant.
Month by month
January and February: cold mornings, crisp sunny days, low crowds outside holidays. Excellent for museums, cafés and walking. Bring a real jacket for evenings.
March, April and May: warm, dry and very pleasant. Semana Santa (Holy Week) is a major domestic travel week — book far ahead and expect full hotels and busy plazas.

July and August: rainy season proper, plus Mexican summer holidays. Afternoons are wet, mornings are lovely, and rates are moderate. FILUG, the university book fair, adds a cultural anchor in this stretch.
September: rain tapering off, and Fiestas Patrias in mid-September fill the plazas — Guanajuato takes independence week seriously given its role in the war.
October: the biggest month. The Festival Internacional Cervantino turns the whole city into a venue for around three weeks, and Día de Muertos follows at the end of the month. Weather is close to perfect. Hotels sell out months in advance and prices climb; book early or stay slightly outside the center.
November and December: settled, dry and cool, with Christmas posadas and a festive center in December. A strong choice if you want good weather without Cervantino prices.
Choosing between festival energy and a quiet city
Come in October if you want the Guanajuato you have seen in photos — packed plazas, live music in every courtyard, street theatre. Come in late February, March, November or early December if you want the same city with room to breathe, easier restaurant tables and better rates. Come in July or August if budget matters most and you can work around afternoon rain.
Whenever you come, altitude and hills are the real variables. Take the first day slowly, drink more water than you think you need, and remember that every walk back to your hotel is probably uphill.
