From León BJX Airport to Guanajuato Capital (2026): Taxi, Transfer, Bus or Rental Car
The 30 km you have to cross after landing: which transport actually exists at BJX, how long it really takes, what to book before you fly, and what to do with a late arrival.
Which airport you actually landed at
BJX has several names on signs, tickets and maps, and it confuses people on arrival: Del Bajío International Airport, Guanajuato International, and León airport are all the same place. It sits near Silao, roughly halfway between León and Guanajuato Capital, which is why it serves both cities and belongs to neither.
The terminal is small and single-level, so nothing about the airport itself is difficult. Everything that goes wrong on this trip happens in the 30 km afterwards, and almost always for the same reason: people assume a public shuttle exists and improvise when it doesn't.
Authorised airport taxi (the default)
Buy the ride at the taxi counter inside the terminal, before you walk out to the curb. You pay a fixed zone fare for Guanajuato Capital, you get a printed ticket, and the dispatcher puts you in the next authorised car. This is the normal, safe way locals do it, and it removes any negotiation at the kerb.
Two practical notes. Have the exact address and phone number of your hotel written down or on your screen — several streets in the centre are tunnels or stairways, and drivers need the reference point rather than the street name. And if your hotel is up a callejón, the car will stop at the nearest point a vehicle can reach; ask the hotel in advance how far that is from their door.
Pre-booked private transfer
Worth the extra cost in four situations: a landing after dark, a group with luggage, Cervantino or Día de Muertos weekends, and any hotel above the centre where you want the driver to wait while you find the entrance. You book by email or WhatsApp with the hotel or an operator, give your flight number, and the driver waits inside arrivals with your name.
The advantage is not luxury, it is certainty: your car exists before you land, the price is agreed, and a delayed flight does not leave you sorting out transport at 23:00 in an emptying terminal.
Rental car — useful for the region, a liability in the city
Rental desks are in the terminal and the paperwork is quick. A car makes excellent sense if your trip includes Dolores Hidalgo, San Miguel de Allende or the mine roads above the city.
Inside Guanajuato Capital it is the opposite. The city is built over a river bed, surface traffic runs through one-way subterranean tunnels, and driving apps and walking apps give contradictory directions because they are describing different levels of the same city. The cheap way: bus via León
There is no bus from BJX to Guanajuato. The budget route is: airport transport into León, then a first-class bus (Primera Plus, ETN) from León's Central de Autobuses to Guanajuato's Central de Autobuses, then a taxi or city bus into the centre. Two changes, two to three hours, and you still pay for the airport leg.

Arriving at the bus station instead
If you came by bus rather than by air, note that the Central de Autobuses de Guanajuato is about 6 km west of the centre, out by the highway — not walking distance. Taxis queue outside and the ride takes 15 to 20 minutes through the tunnels; city buses marked *Centro* run the same route for a fraction of the fare and are fine with a backpack, awkward with wheels.
Timing your landing
Aim to land before 18:00 on a first visit. Arriving in daylight means you see the callejones once before you have to navigate them with bags, and the centre is far easier to read by eye than by map. Add 15 to 20 minutes to the drive on weekday rush hours and on festival weekends, when the roads into the centre are managed and some streets close.
