Cervantino 2026: Your Complete Festival Guide

Latin America's biggest arts festival returns this October. Here's everything you need to know about tickets, venues, and the can't-miss shows.

The Festival Internacional Cervantino needs no introduction. For 18 days every October, Guanajuato transforms into the cultural capital of Latin America, hosting everything from opera and ballet to experimental theater and electronic music in venues that range from grand 19th-century theaters to underground tunnels.

For 2026, the festival runs from October 9th to 26th. Early bird tickets go on sale June 1st — mark your calendar, because the best shows sell out within hours. The opening night gala at Teatro Juárez is already the most requested ticket in the festival's 54-year history, featuring a collaborative performance between the Guanajuato Symphony Orchestra and a guest ensemble from Seville.

The Teatro Juárez remains the crown jewel venue, but don't overlook the free plaza performances. The callejoneadas during Cervantino are unlike anything you've experienced — imagine 200 musicians in 17th-century Spanish dress winding through the alleys at midnight, stopping at corners to perform acoustic sets that echo off the stone walls. It's magical, it's free, and it's the most Guanajuato thing you can possibly do.

New this year: a dedicated digital art pavilion in the Ex-Hacienda de San Gabriel de Barrera. Three immersive installations by Mexican and international artists will transform the colonial spaces into something between a gallery and a dream. It's worth the short taxi ride from the center.

Pro tip: book your accommodation before August. The city fills up completely during Cervantino, and prices in the historic center triple by September. Consider staying in Marfil or Pastita for a more local experience at half the price — you're only a 15-minute walk from the main venues.
