What 234 Verified Guanajuato Businesses Tell Us About the State

Guanajuato Local Hub Editors 2026-09-07 12 min readLast reviewed & updated

We analysed every business in our verified directory — 234 listings across eight cities — for ratings, review counts, price tiers, categories and neighbourhoods. Eight findings, including why San Miguel de Allende costs 38% more than the capital and why the highest-rated categories have the fewest reviews.

Method, briefly

This is our own directory data, not a survey. Every business here has been verified by our team; ratings and review counts come from Google, price tier is the standard 1–4 scale, and categories are our normalised groupings. We looked at all 234 listings as of this analysis: 224 carry a Google rating, 231 carry coordinates, and eight cities have five or more listings. We are not naming individual businesses in the findings — this is about the shape of the market, and every figure below is an aggregate. Numbers move as the directory grows, and we will re-run this analysis as it does.

Finding 1: Star ratings have stopped being a filter

The average rating across 224 rated businesses is 4.50. The distribution:

Rating bandBusinessesShare of rated
4.5 – 5.014263%
4.0 – 4.496931%
3.5 – 3.99115%
Below 3.521%

Almost two-thirds of the directory is above 4.5, and 94% is above 4.0. That is not a quality signal, it is a ceiling effect: consumers rate generously, businesses below 4.0 in a tourist economy tend not to survive, and a 4.6 tells you almost nothing that a 4.4 does not. If you are choosing where to eat by sorting on stars, you are sorting noise. Read the recent reviews and the photo dates instead — and read them in the language the reviewer wrote in.

Finding 2: Review counts are wildly unequal — the median business is nearly invisible

Mean review count: 961. Median: 248. The mean is almost four times the median, which means a handful of very high-volume venues dominate. Broken down by category, the gap is stark:

CategoryListingsAvg ratingAvg reviews
Retail & shopping354.482,511
Nightlife174.481,239
Food & drink704.47961
Stays384.38750
Tours & activities164.77258
Health & wellness194.7578
Local services204.6834
Real estate & offices194.2331

The inverse relationship is the story. The three highest-rated categories — tours (4.77), health and wellness (4.75), local services (4.68) — have the *lowest* review counts by an order of magnitude. A tour operator with 4.8 stars and 250 reviews is being judged by people who chose it deliberately; a shopping centre with 2,500 reviews is being rated by everyone who parked there. High-volume ratings measure footfall. Low-volume ratings measure intent.

The practical consequence for visitors: for tours and health and wellness, a low review count is not a warning sign. For food, it usually means the place is new or genuinely local.

Finding 3: Guanajuato is a mid-price state, and San Miguel is the outlier

Price tier distribution across all 234 listings:

TierBusinessesShare
$ (budget)3214%
$$ (mid)12855%
$$$5624%
$$$$188%

55% of the entire directory sits in a single tier. Guanajuato is a $$ state.

By city, average price tier tells a much sharper story:

CityListingsAvg ratingAvg price tier
San Miguel de Allende454.612.84
Irapuato144.442.57
Dolores Hidalgo134.342.23
León274.412.19
Celaya114.432.18
Salamanca174.452.12
Guanajuato Capital934.562.06
Acámbaro134.301.77

San Miguel de Allende's average price tier is 38% higher than Guanajuato Capital's (2.84 vs 2.06) while its average rating is only 0.05 higher. That is the clearest number in this dataset: you are paying a very large premium for a marginal difference in how businesses are rated. It matches what visitors tell us and what we wrote in Guanajuato Capital vs San Miguel de Allende — and Acámbaro, at 1.77, is the cheapest place in the state to eat and sleep well.

Finding 4: Coffee is the state's real signature category

Ignoring geographic tags, the most common descriptive tags across the directory are:

  1. coffee — 20
  2. rooftop — 13
  3. mexican — 13
  4. breakfast — 13
  5. real estate — 12
  6. wellness — 11
  7. spa — 11
  8. hotel — 11
  9. leather — 10
  10. boutique — 10

Coffee is the single most common thing our verified businesses do, ahead of Mexican food itself, and "breakfast" and "brunch" together outrank "dinner" (13 + 9 vs 8). Guanajuato Capital is a university city with a large remote-working population, and the directory reflects a daytime economy rather than a nightlife one — which lines up with our coffee guide and best cafés to work remotely being two of the most-read pages on this site.

"Leather" appearing at 10 is entirely a León signal — the state's shoe and leather capital shows up in the data as a distinct industrial cluster rather than a tourism one. See León listings.

Finding 5: In the capital, cheaper neighbourhoods rate higher than the tourist core

Guanajuato Capital neighbourhoods with three or more verified listings:

NeighbourhoodListingsAvg ratingAvg price tier
Centro214.342.43
Zona Centro184.561.67
Paseo de la Presa94.611.56
Barrio de la Presa84.412.50
San Javier54.762.80
Marfil44.682.00
Noria Alta34.852.00

The tourist core rates lowest and prices highest: Centro averages 4.34 at a price tier of 2.43. Paseo de la Presa averages 4.61 at 1.56 — a higher rating at roughly two-thirds the price point. Noria Alta, an ordinary residential and university area with no tourism at all, has the highest average rating in the city at 4.85.

This is the numeric version of the advice in hidden gems in Guanajuato: walk uphill or walk to the reservoir and you pay less for something locals rate higher. Practical starting points: the Paseo de la Presa local guide, where to stay near Presa de la Olla and the San Javier neighbourhood guide.

One caveat we will state plainly: "Centro" and "Zona Centro" are the same district recorded two ways in the source data, so treat that split as a labelling artefact, not two neighbourhoods.

Finding 6: Stays are the state's weakest-rated tourist category

Accommodation averages 4.38 — the lowest of any visitor-facing category, and below food and drink (4.47), retail (4.48) and nightlife (4.48). It is also the most expensive: average price tier 2.84, with 26 of 38 stays at $$$ or above.

Our read, from talking to owners: colonial buildings are extremely hard to run as modern hotels. Stone stairs, no lifts, noise transmission through courtyards, and heating and water pressure in 300-year-old structures generate exactly the complaints that pull a rating from 4.7 to 4.3 — none of which reflect the hospitality. If you are booking, read reviews specifically for stairs, noise and hot water rather than overall score, and cross-check with where to stay by neighbourhood and our accessibility guide.

Finding 7: Only 23% of businesses publish a WhatsApp number

Contact channels across the 234 listings:

ChannelBusinessesShare
Website9239%
WhatsApp5323%
Instagram209%

Mexico is one of the most WhatsApp-dependent markets in the world, and it is the channel visitors ask for most often on this site — "can I message them?" is the most common question we get about a listing. Yet more than three-quarters of businesses in our directory have no published WhatsApp number, and 61% have no website at all.

This is the largest gap in the dataset between demand and supply, and it is also the cheapest to close. Any owner reading this can claim their listing and add a WhatsApp number in a few minutes; the click data we show owners in their dashboard consistently makes WhatsApp the highest-converting contact button we offer, ahead of phone and directions.

Finding 8: 40% of the directory is outside the two famous cities

Guanajuato Capital (93) and San Miguel de Allende (45) account for 138 listings — 59% of the total. The remaining 96 are spread across León, Salamanca, Irapuato, Acámbaro, Dolores Hidalgo, Celaya, Salvatierra and smaller places.

Those secondary cities are where the price and rating data is most interesting: Acámbaro at price tier 1.77, Salamanca at 4.45 average rating and 2.12, Celaya at 4.43 and 2.18. None of them are tourist destinations, and all of them are cheaper than the capital for the same rated quality. If you are living, working or relocating in Guanajuato rather than visiting, that is the useful half of this dataset — browse León, Irapuato, Salamanca, Celaya, Dolores Hidalgo and Acámbaro.

What we would like to measure next

Three things this dataset cannot yet tell us, and which will get better as more owners claim their pages:

  • Opening-hours reliability. Published hours and actual hours diverge here more than anywhere else we have worked, and we have no systematic way to quantify it yet.
  • Language coverage. We do not yet track which businesses can serve visitors in English or French, which is the second most common question we receive after WhatsApp.
  • Seasonality. Ratings and review volumes almost certainly move around the Cervantino and Día de Muertos; a year of month-by-month data will show it.

If you own a business in Guanajuato, claiming your listing is what makes the next version of this analysis better — and it is free. If you are planning a trip, everything above is browsable at Guanajuato Capital or on the map.
