Edition 2 of our dated data series: what 235 directory listings across nine Guanajuato cities and 204,125 public reviews show about ratings, review depth and the digital gap.
About this data
This is edition 2 of a dated series. Everything below is counted from our own directory on the date in the title — no survey, no estimates, no third-party dataset. The first edition, what 234 verified Guanajuato businesses tell us, was measured on 7 September 2026; we publish a fresh count so the numbers can be compared over time rather than quoted forever.
Method: direct counts over every listing in the directory, including ratings and review counts synced from public Google Business profiles. Listings without a public rating are excluded from rating averages (18 of 235). Nothing here is projected to the state economy as a whole — it describes the businesses on this platform.
Finding 1: the state is more than two cities, but only just

Guanajuato Capital and San Miguel de Allende together account for 59% of listings — and they also hold the two highest average ratings. That is a tourism effect, not a quality verdict: businesses that serve visitors collect reviews from people primed to leave them, while a bakery in Acambaro is rated mostly by neighbours who never open the app.
Finding 2: reviews are extremely unevenly distributed

Twenty-one per cent of listings hold the overwhelming majority of the review volume. For a small business the practical reading is blunt: the gap between you and a landmark competitor is not quality, it is years of asking. Ten reviews collected in a month moves a listing with 40 reviews far more than it moves one with 4,000.
Finding 3: ratings cluster high, so the differences that matter are small
Average rating across the directory is 4.50, and 73 listings (31%) sit at 4.7 or above. Anything below 4.2 is a visible outlier.

Two patterns repeat everywhere: service categories out-rate hospitality, because a tour or a dentist is judged on one interaction while a hotel is judged on beds, noise, breakfast and wifi at once; and real estate rates lowest of all, a category-wide phenomenon driven by transactions that end badly for one side.
Finding 4: the digital gap is the real story

Nearly every business in Guanajuato can be found. Fewer than a quarter can be messaged. In a state where WhatsApp is the default channel for booking a table, asking a price or confirming opening hours, that is the single largest missed opportunity in the data — and it costs nothing to fix.
Sector detail: Acambaro is the outlier in the right direction, with 12 of its 13 listings publishing a WhatsApp number, against 20 of 94 in Guanajuato Capital. Small-town businesses run on messaging; big-city businesses assume a phone call.
Finding 5: retail carries the state s commercial weight
Retail & Shopping is the largest single category at 35 listings and 85,380 reviews — 42% of all review volume in the directory. That is Leon leather, Dolores Hidalgo ceramics and Capital market shopping combined, and it is a reminder that Guanajuato s visitor economy is a buying economy as much as a sightseeing one. Cafes are second by count (22) but carry 18,272 reviews; restaurants, 19 listings and 18,486 reviews.
What a business owner should take from this
- Publish a WhatsApp number. 77% of listings do not. It is the cheapest competitive edge available in this dataset.
- Ask for reviews systematically. The median is 228; if you are under 100, a month of asking changes your position materially.
- Do not chase 5.0. At an average of 4.50, a 4.6 with 300 reviews outperforms a 5.0 with 11.
- If you are outside the two tourist cities, you are competing in a thin field. Seven of nine cities have fewer than 30 listings each — visibility there is still cheap.
