San Miguel de Allende is a beautifully preserved colonial town that has been reshaped around visitors and residents from the US and Canada: flatter, calmer, wealthier, and built for lingering over lunch.

Walking and terrain
Both are cobblestoned, but the difficulty is different. Guanajuato is vertical: stairs, callejones, and a funicular to Mirador del Pípila. If knees or altitude are a concern, read getting around Guanajuato first. Language and atmosphere
In San Miguel you can spend a week in English. In Guanajuato Capital, Spanish is the default outside hotels — better for immersion, harder if you have none. Guanajuato's evenings belong to students, estudiantinas and plaza life; San Miguel's belong to galleries, restaurants and rooftops. Neither is better, but they attract different people.
Culture and events
