25 Best Things to Do in San Miguel de Allende (2026)

Guanajuato Local Hub Editors 2026-08-12 11 min readLast reviewed & updated

A local, current list of the 25 best things to do in San Miguel de Allende — the Parroquia, Fábrica La Aurora, rooftops, markets, hot springs and day trips.

San Miguel de Allende is small, steep and dense — almost everything below sits inside a 25-minute walk of the Jardín Principal. Bring shoes for cobblestones, plan the hills for the morning, and keep the middle of the day for a long lunch.

In the Centro Histórico

  1. The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel — the pink neo-Gothic church that put the town on postcards.
  2. The Jardín Principal at dusk, when the mariachis and the birds arrive at once.
  3. Templo de San Francisco and the Oratorio de San Felipe Neri, two blocks apart.
  4. Casa de Allende (Museo Histórico), the independence hero's birthplace on the square.
  5. Bellas Artes (Centro Cultural El Nigromante), with its unfinished Siqueiros mural.
  6. Biblioteca Pública, its courtyard café and the Sunday house-and-garden tour.
  7. The Callejón de los Muertos and the lanes climbing toward Salida a Querétaro.
  8. Sunset drinks on a terrace — see our rooftop bar guide, starting with Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar or Quince Rooftop.

Art, markets and shopping

  1. Fábrica La Aurora — a 1902 textile mill turned art and design centre.
  2. Mercado de Artesanías, the long craft alley behind the Mercado Ignacio Ramírez.
  3. Mercado Ignacio Ramírez for produce, flowers and cheap comida corrida.
  4. The Tuesday Market (Tianguis del Martes) for everything else, out on the Salida a Celaya.
  5. Galleries around Calle Zacateros and Recreo, most open Tuesday to Saturday.
  6. The murals and studios of Colonia Guadalupe.

Eat and drink

  1. Coffee at Ki'bok Coffee, Lavanda Cafe de Especialidad or El Cafe de la Mancha.
  2. Lunch at La Parada for Peruvian, or Maria Xoconostle for modern Mexican.
  3. Dinner at Restaurante Munay or El Correo for old-school local cooking.
  4. Pizza and natural wine at Tostevere.
  5. A mezcal tasting, then a nightcap at Bekeb Rooftop or Atrio Rooftop.
  6. Breakfast at Zenteno Cafe before the day gets warm. Browse everything on /explore/san-miguel-de-allende/food.

Outdoors, wellness and day trips

  1. El Charco del Ingenio botanical garden — best at opening, with city views.
  2. Mirador de San Miguel for the classic photo of the Parroquia over the rooftops.
  3. The hot springs north of town (La Gruta, Escondido Place), 20 minutes by taxi.
  4. A hot-air balloon flight at sunrise over the valley.
  5. A day trip to Dolores Hidalgo for Talavera and ice cream, or Guanajuato Capital for tunnels and mines. Sanctuary of Atotonilco, a UNESCO site, is on the same road.

Where to stay

Splurge at Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, Casa de Sierra Nevada or Live Aqua; go boutique at NUMU Boutique Hotel, Cantera 1910 or Amatte Wellnest Community. More on /explore/san-miguel-de-allende/stay.

FAQ

How many days do you need in San Miguel de Allende?

Two days covers the Centro, one rooftop sunset and one gallery afternoon. Three days is the comfortable number: it adds El Charco del Ingenio, the hot springs or a day trip without rushing.

Is San Miguel de Allende walkable?

Yes, but the cobblestones and hills are real. The Centro is flat enough around the Jardín and steep everywhere else. Taxis inside town cost about 60–90 MXN and are easy to find on the square.

What is the best time of year to visit?

October and November (Day of the Dead, San Miguel's feast day) and February to April have the best weather. May is hot and dry, and July to September brings afternoon rain that usually clears by evening.

Do you need a car in San Miguel de Allende?

No. Buses from Querétaro, León and Guanajuato arrive at the Central de Autobuses, and everything in town is walkable or a short taxi ride. See getting to San Miguel de Allende.
