A walking guide to Colonia Guadalupe — San Miguel de Allende's mural district: what to see, when to go, safety, and where to eat nearby.
Guadalupe was a working-class barrio long before the murals. In the 2010s residents and resident artists began painting facades with permission from homeowners, and the neighborhood turned into an open-air gallery that keeps changing — repaint one wall and the walking route changes with it. It is still a lived-in place: laundry lines, tortillerías, dogs on rooftops, kids on bikes. That is the appeal.
Walking it
There is no single official route. A good loop: walk north on Calle Nemesio Diez or Santo Domingo out of the Centro, zigzag through Calle Estrella and the lanes around Calle San Antonio Abad, then drift downhill toward the Calzada de la Aurora. Look for the large portrait murals and the Day of the Dead pieces near the small plazas. Studios with open doors usually welcome visitors — knock, greet in Spanish, and ask before photographing anyone.
Etiquette and safety
Guadalupe is generally calm during the day and increasingly walked by visitors, but it is residential: keep the volume down, do not photograph inside doorways or courtyards, and do not block narrow lanes for photos. After dark the streets are poorly lit and there is little reason to be there; take a taxi back to the Centro instead. Bring water and sun protection, as shade is scarce.

Yes, during daylight hours it is a normal residential neighborhood walked by visitors every day. Use ordinary city sense, keep valuables discreet, and take a taxi rather than walking back after dark.
Do you need a guide to see the murals?
No. Walking on your own is free and easy, though local mural tours run some Saturdays and add the stories behind the artists and the families who own the walls.
How long does the mural walk take?
Plan on 1 to 1.5 hours at an easy pace, plus another hour if you continue to Fábrica La Aurora at the bottom of the hill.
