1. Santuario de Atotonilco (~15 minutes)
The UNESCO-listed sanctuary known as the "Sistine Chapel of Mexico" for its dense folk-baroque murals, in a small village north-west of town. It pairs naturally with the hot springs on the same road, which is how most people do it. Dress modestly, expect active worship rather than a museum atmosphere, and bring cash for the small donation and the vendors outside.
2. Hot springs on the Dolores road (~20–30 minutes)

3. Cañada de la Virgen (~45 minutes)
The region's most important archaeological site, a hilltop ceremonial complex south-west of town. Access is controlled: you park at the visitor centre and continue with a guide, so book ahead and confirm the day's schedule. Wear real shoes and a hat — there is very little shade.
4. Dolores Hidalgo (~45 minutes)
Where Mexican independence was declared, and where you eat ice cream in flavours you will not believe (shrimp, mole, beer, avocado) on the main plaza. 5. Mineral de Pozos (~1 hour)
A semi-ghost mining town turned art and mezcal destination: ruined haciendas, workshops making pre-Hispanic instruments, and a handful of good hotels and restaurants for a slow lunch. Best with a car, and best on a weekend when more places are actually open.
6. Guanajuato Capital (~1.5 hours)
The state capital is a completely different city — steeper, denser, student-driven, built over a network of road tunnels. It is a long day trip but a rewarding one, and many visitors end up adding a night. 7. Querétaro (~1 hour)
A large, prosperous, and much cheaper city with a beautiful UNESCO centre, an aqueduct, and a real restaurant scene that is not built around tourism. 8. The Guanajuato wine route (~30–60 minutes)
Vineyards spread between San Miguel, Dolores and San Luis de la Paz now run tastings, tours and long lunches. Reserve; most do not accept walk-ins. Bring a designated driver or hire a taxi for the afternoon.
