Hours, how to get there, what to expect and how long to spend at Fábrica La Aurora, San Miguel de Allende's 1902 textile mill turned art centre.
The mill spun cotton from 1902 until 1991. Rather than being gutted, it was reopened in 2004 with the machinery, brick walls, iron beams and factory windows left in place, and the floor space rented to artists. The result is unusually good: whitewashed halls with concrete floors, plants everywhere, and work you can watch being made — painters and sculptors keep open studios alongside the commercial galleries.
What is inside
Expect contemporary Mexican painting and sculpture, photography, textiles and folk art, plus antiques, furniture and lighting dealers who ship internationally. Prices run from a few hundred pesos for prints to serious collector figures. Nobody pressures you; browsing quietly for an hour is completely normal. Openings, usually on Saturday afternoons, are open to the public and are the liveliest time to visit.
Practical tips
Go on a weekday morning if you want to talk to artists, Saturday if you want the social version. The complex is flat and largely accessible, a relief after the Centro's cobblestones. There is parking on site. The two cafés inside are good for a coffee break, but for a proper lunch afterwards, head back toward the Centro to Maria Xoconostle, Tostevere or La Parada, or take coffee at Lavanda Cafe de Especialidad.
