When to visit San Miguel de Allende: month-by-month weather, the rainy season, crowd and price peaks, festival collisions, and the shoulder weeks that give you good weather without the crush.
Month by month
January. Cold mornings (often 4–8 °C at dawn), brilliant dry afternoons around 22–24 °C. The first week is still busy with holiday visitors; after Día de Reyes on 6 January the town empties and rates drop sharply. Bring a real jacket — many colonial buildings have no heating.
February. Similar to January but milder at night, with the Candelaria plant fair filling Parque Juárez early in the month. One of the most comfortable months to walk all day.
March. Warm and dry, climbing to the high 20s °C. Jacarandas bloom. Semana Santa begins on 29 March in 2026, so the last days of the month are already busy and expensive.
April. Semana Santa runs through 5 April — spectacular, and the most crowded week of spring. After Easter, mid- and late April is hot (28–31 °C), dry and dusty, but quiet and cheap.
May. The hottest month before the rains, regularly 30 °C+ in the afternoon. Mornings and evenings stay pleasant. Good value, low crowds — and a good month for indoor time at Fábrica La Aurora and long coffee mornings at Lavanda Cafe de Especialidad or Ki'bok Coffee.
June. Rains begin, and the landscape turns green within two weeks. Afternoon storms are brief. The Día de los Locos parade on 14 June 2026 is one of the year's best free spectacles without the price surge of the big festivals.
July and August. Peak rainy season and the lowest visitor numbers of the year alongside late January. Days are mild (25–27 °C), mornings usually clear, and hotel rates are at their softest. Pack a light rain shell and shoes with grip — wet cobblestones are slippery.
September. Wettest month early on, then the Fiesta de San Miguel Arcángel and the pre-dawn Alborada around 25–29 September (dates provisional until the parish confirms) turn the town into the busiest weekend of the year. Independence celebrations on 15–16 September add to it.
October. Rains taper off, skies clear, and the Día de Muertos build-up starts mid-month. Excellent weather. The final days of October run into the Muertos crowd. The Festival Internacional Cervantino in Guanajuato Capital (3–18 October 2026) is a 90-minute day trip away.
November. Many residents' favourite month: dry, 24–26 °C, cool nights, marigolds everywhere for Día de Muertos on 1–2 November, then a calm and beautiful rest of the month.
December. Cold nights, clear days. Posadas run 16–24 December and are the most atmospheric free events of the year, but from around the 20th the town is full and rates peak through 2 January.
If you want good weather without the crowds
Target the first three weeks of November, mid-February to mid-March, or the second half of April. You get dry, warm days, full restaurant and gallery hours, and no festival price surge. Rooftops like Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar and Atrio Rooftop still take same-week reservations in these windows, which is rarely true in late September.
If you want the festivals
Pick one and book early. Semana Santa is the most solemn and elaborate; the Alborada in late September is the loudest and most local; Día de Muertos is the most photogenic. Practical notes whatever month you choose
- Altitude. Take the first day slowly, drink more water than usual, and go easy on alcohol the first night.
- Sun. Even in January the UV at this elevation is strong. Hat and sunscreen year-round.
