The market: crafts, gifts and volume
The Mercado de Artesanías runs as a long lane of stalls near the centre and is open daily, roughly 9am to 7pm. It is where you buy embroidered blouses, tin ornaments, woven bags, beaded work, papier-mâché, and the pieces you actually take home in a suitcase.

Bargaining etiquette: ask the price, ask if there is a better price for two or three items, and settle quickly. Sellers are artisans or their families; grinding someone down over 30 pesos reads badly and rarely works.
Fábrica La Aurora: design, art and interiors
Fábrica La Aurora is the single best shopping stop in town if you care about design: a converted textile factory holding galleries, antiques, furniture, ceramics, rugs, jewellery studios and a couple of cafés, in a building worth visiting for itself. Prices are fixed and posted, staff speak English, and most dealers can arrange crating and shipping for larger pieces.

Folk art, opals and specialty finds
Galería Atotonilco, out along the Atotonilco road, is a large, carefully assembled collection of Mexican folk art from across the country — masks, alebrijes, retablos, textiles — with the kind of documentation collectors want. Talavera and larger ceramics: buy in Dolores Hidalgo if you can spare the day. It is the region's ceramics town, the range is wider and the prices are lower. See our day trips guide.

Customs and rules: antiques and certain archaeological or religious items can be restricted for export. If a seller calls something "colonial" or "pre-Hispanic", ask for paperwork before paying.
