By bus
The Central de Autobuses de Dolores Hidalgo sits on the north-east edge of the Centro, a 10-minute walk or a very short taxi from the plaza. Flecha Amarilla and Primera Plus run the Bajio routes; the San Miguel service is the frequent one and does not need booking — turn up and take the next departure. Fares on the San Miguel leg are low; the Queretaro and Mexico City legs are worth buying online in advance at holiday weekends.
From Guanajuato Capital there is no single fast direct service all day: most travellers change in San Miguel de Allende or take a Dolores-bound service from the Central de Autobuses de Guanajuato when the timing works.
By car
From San Miguel de Allende take highway 51 north — a straight, well-surfaced two-lane road through farmland, with a few slow trucks. From Guanajuato Capital the usual route is 110 east through Santa Rosa and the sierra, which is scenic and slower, or via San Miguel if the mountain road is being worked on.
Practical notes:
- Fill up before you leave. Stations exist in Dolores but are on the ring roads, not in the Centro.
- Streets around the Plaza Principal are narrow and one-way. Park on Hidalgo or in a lot two or three blocks out and walk.

Which airport
BJX (Del Bajio, Leon/Silao) is the main international gateway: about 2 hours by road, with US and Mexican connections. QRO (Queretaro) is a similar drive and often has better fares from the US. Both have car-rental desks; if you are not driving, a private transfer or a bus to San Miguel de Allende followed by the local bus is the standard combination.
Combining it with San Miguel de Allende
The most common way to see Dolores is as a half-day from San Miguel. A workable version: leave San Miguel at 09:30, spend four to five hours in Dolores following the things to do guide, and be back for dinner. Add the Santuario de Atotonilco, a UNESCO-listed sanctuary, on the way — it sits just off the same road.

Getting around once you arrive
Everything in the Centro is walkable: the parish, both museums, the plaza and most ceramics shops are within six blocks.
